The Chinese Garden is a part of the recreational park Marzahn which is one of the most popular recreation centres in all of Berlin. On a total area of approximately 21 hectares, gardens from all around the world are, since 1987 being restored to their former glory. Next to the Chinese garden there is also a Balinese garden, an oriental garden and numerous other themed gardens.
The Chinese garden and indeed the entire recreational park Marzahn is a special attraction for all the visitors to Berlin. Even if you have been here several times before, you will still obtain new and fascinating impressions. This is due to the variation of flowers which are changed according to the season. The Chinese garden is thus a special jewel within the Marzahn recreational park. It was created in honour of the twinning of Berlin with Beijing, and was finally opened in October 2000.
The heart of the garden is a lake with a surface area of approximately 4,500 square metres, surrounded by a plant-rich hilly landscape. Aside from the artistically laid plants one will also find a replica of a section from the Great Wall of China in addition to numerous bridges and pavilions. These attractions were not modelled by German architects; rather they are elaborate structures which were decorated by Chinese architects and landscape gardeners.
As visual highlights there are several colour-coded themes in the Chinese garden, for instance a white garden with many lotus flowers or the impressive Rhododendrons.
In the middle of the Chinese garden there is a feature which is popular amongst Berliners - an original Chinese tea house in which various speciality teas from China in particular green-tea are offered. A trip to the Chinese garden should certainly be wound down with a visit to the tea-house. Additionally, it is advisable to allocate plenty of time when visiting, as each individual garden covers an extensive area and may take several hours.
